Team Columbia-Highroad successfully led out sprinter Mark Cavendish today to take his second win in two days. At the end of 210km of racing from Visalia to Paso Robles, in the team's US base of San Luis Obispo County, the lead out train dropped Cavendish off with 200m remaining in the race, in perfect position to sprint to victory ahead of Belgium's Tom Boonen.

“The team did another great job for me today," said Cavendish. "they chased hard all day to bring the break back and finished it off with the perfect lead out."

"I sprinted extra hard today because I could see a shadow coming up behind me and I thought it was Tom Boonen coming up to me again. It turns out I was sprinting against my own shadow," he joked.

Tomorrow's time trial in Solvang will be an important stage for the general classification as will be the final two stages on Saturday and Sunday.

"I came to California with the goal to win today's stage," said Cavendish. "Saturday's stage could also potentially be a sprint but there is still a lot at stake for thy GC, so we'll see what happens."

Update on Kim Kirchen:
